CFA Quant: The 3 Formulas That Cost Candidates the Most Marks (And 5 You Can Skim)

Quantitative Methods is 8% of CFA Level 1 — approximately 14 questions. It is a topic that intimidates many candidates but is actually quite learnable once you focus on the right concepts.

What actually appears on the exam

The CFA Level 1 Quant section focuses on a relatively small set of concepts: time value of money, statistical measures (mean, variance, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis), probability distributions (normal, binomial, t-distribution), hypothesis testing, and linear regression basics.

Time value of money — non-negotiable

TVM is foundational not just for Quant but for Fixed Income, Equity, and Corporate Finance. You must be able to solve PV, FV, PMT, N, and I/Y problems on your calculator without hesitation. Practice until it is automatic.

Statistics: focus on the distributions

Understand the normal distribution thoroughly — how to use z-scores, what confidence intervals mean, and how to interpret standard deviation. The t-distribution matters for small samples. The binomial distribution appears occasionally. Poisson and lognormal are less common.

Hypothesis testing framework

Know the structure: null hypothesis, alternative hypothesis, test statistic, critical value, p-value, Type I and Type II errors. The exam tests whether you understand the process, not just the formulas.
